Salzburg: A Solo Traveler’s Dream

Salzburg is my favorite solo destination because it offers a mix of experiences for active travelers and folks who just want to relax. When you arrive, buy the Salzburg Card, which covers just about everything you’ll want to do at a fraction of the cost compared to paying for them individually.

Things like scaling Untersberg mountain or climbing up Hohensalzburg Fortress are great solo adventures that provide a peaceful experience away from the hustle and bustle while offering incredible views. Activities like the city boat tour, the Festival Hall tour, the Sound of Music tour, and the trick fountains at Hellbrunn Palace are done in groups, giving you an opportunity to mingle with other travelers.

There are also multiple pastry and ice cream shops in the neighborhood. Can anything really beat enjoying a tasty treat after a busy day of exploring?

Gran Canaria: Community and Adventure

The best destination I have come across so far as a solo traveler is Gran Canaria, not the resorts in the south, but the great hiking and surfing opportunities in the north and the city of Las Palmas.

There is a big digital nomad community, mostly in the winter months, and lots of activities for international visitors and expats. It is very easy to meet others and make connections. There is always somebody who organizes day trips into the mountains or a boat party. There are groups for yoga, salsa, volleyball, and much more that you can easily join.

Gran Canaria also has a good public transport system and is a safe destination, so you can venture out on your own without any concern if you’re not up for company.

Thailand: Heartfelt Solo Experiences

Solo journeys have had a huge part in shaping who I am today. My first solo international trip was to Thailand for two months, and it stole my heart. I was so nervous about buying a plane ticket for an 18-hour journey to a country where English is not the native language! From the moment I got off the plane, I was fully immersed in the vibrant and foreign land of Southeast Asia. Initially, I felt a bit overwhelmed and unprepared, but that feeling quickly dissipated.

Upon leaving the airport, I was met with the most gracious and welcoming people I had ever encountered. The Thai people went out of their way to communicate with me and accommodate my needs, making me feel safe and at home. Thailand is exceptionally solo-friendly due to its friendly locals, affordable living, and diverse range of activities. From the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serene beaches of the islands and the cultural richness of Chiang Mai, there is something for every type of traveler.

I wholeheartedly recommend Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, as the best travel destination for solo travelers. The region offers a perfect blend of urban excitement, natural beauty, and cultural experiences, ensuring that every solo traveler finds something that resonates with them.

The ease of travel within the country, the availability of solo traveler-friendly accommodations, and the widespread use of English in tourist areas make it an ideal destination for those embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

Penang: Serene and Secure Retreat

I spent eight months in Penang as a digital nomad, traveling solo.

I lived in a condo situated on a hill by the beach; it was amazing and peaceful.

I never witnessed a crime while I was there, and security was present in most shopping malls and tourist destinations.

Penang is known for its low crime rate, excellent food, and affordability.

The majority of people there speak Malay, English, or Chinese, and they are welcoming to foreigners. A lot of retired expats have moved over to the hills near the beach for the slow-paced living and medical care.

Australia: Safe and Scenic Exploration

Australia is one of the best countries for solo travelers. This is because they can feel safe moving around the country, exploring its natural beauty and other interesting sights due to good infrastructure, welcoming people, and various group tours available. Those tourists who are in search of serenity can easily find it in Australia with beautiful sceneries like the Gold Coast or the Great Barrier Reef.

Australia’s lively cities provide a wealth of cultural and culinary experiences for those seeking an urban lifestyle. Solo travelers can thoroughly enjoy Sydney’s dynamic atmosphere by visiting the iconic Opera House and bustling harbors. Meanwhile, the hidden gems of Melbourne’s laneways, street art, and food culture will ensure that you won’t really feel lonely.
